Self Image: Activity 3

Consider some of the social pressures that you think may shape your behavior and personal image. List the images most commonly associated with the categories or ‘boxes’ you have already listed in Activity

How have you responded to social pressures to conform by adopting an appearance that relates to the categories that you feel you have placed in or have chosen?

Dan Caplinger

This image relates to social pressure in the sense that friends and family may sometimes rely on you or someone else to pay for things. Some people will use the excuse "of they have the money for it" to pretty much walk all over someone. This image by Dan, Caplinger clearly shows the subject with a few stacks of money indicating that this individual is wealthy.

In situations like this, I have responded with saying "I have money because I know when not to spend it unlike others". I do pay for friends on occasion but only with a mutual understanding that I will be paid back equally and the same goes for them if they pay for me.

Categories are set up by some to define others in order to silicate them for things they want. If you know that you do or do not fit into tat category, then you will be fine and all you need to do is tell the truth of the situation when in a social pressured environment.

Self Image: Activity 2

Find images in the media, which have been used to represent attractive and unattractive aspects of the human face. Examine and record carefully the photographic techniques used to accentuate both these qualities, drawing up a list that relates to the images you have found.

List the physical characteristics that we have come to admire in both the male and female face and write 100 words in response to the following questions:
Do you believe that media images or public opinion are responsible for the characteristics of beauty becoming universal stereotypes?
Do you believe people admiring media images of glamorous models can do any harm?

#1                                               #2

Yuriy Zhuravov                         Daily Mail Reporters

The photographer in image #1 clearly used a lot of make up to his benefit while also using light to give the skin a good look. However, the photographer in image #2 did not use make-up or even light to their benefit, but it is clear on what they were trying to capture which was the unattractive side to the model.

When you look at what is attractive and what is not, you can see that standards change over time and that is because they are constantly influenced by what is put on TV, magazines, movies, etc. This the the force that dictates what is "hot" and what is not. I do believe that listening to these influences from the media is harmful. People should not be so easily-influenced in the first place, but if they are, then the media is only doing more harm for them. The media shows girls that are very skinny leading other girls to believe they should look like that too. This is horrible because in reality, those models do not look like that and instead they have a lot of post-processing work done to their images by professionals to make them look "better".

Time: Activity 4

Find a photograph where the photographer has used a slow shutter speed and describe the subject matter including the background. Discuss any technical difficulties the photographer may have encountered and how these mat have been overcome.

Jason Rogers

The subject in this particular photo is most likely this flow of water. Due to the long exposure, the water movement is captured as flowing down the rocks. The background, given that it does not move, is in clear focus and detail.

The photographer may have encountered some difficulties such as getting the aperture to shutter speed ratio correct in order to get the image you see above. He might've also had trouble deciding the right time exposure to truly get the "frozen water" effect to it.
